Fun with Static

Static Balloon

Have some static-y fun using just a balloon and some paper scraps with this quick and classic science experiment.

Using static electricity produced by rubbing a balloon over fabric, make paper scraps jump and cling to the balloon. Kids love watching this!

You’ll need:

A balloon
Wool or fleece material (any fabric could work)
Tiny paper shreds or table sugar

Static Balloon

How-To:

Drop paper shreds or a spoonful of table sugar onto a table top. Vigorously rub the balloon over your fabric to generate static electricity. You’ll see the results when you hold it over the paper… the same effect you see if you hold it over someone’s hair… the static pulls the paper up and makes it jump onto the balloon. Fun to watch!

The effect doesn’t last too long, but you can re-electrify your balloon and try again.
