It may officially be fall, but my son is still into catching bugs (probably more so because they keep trying to sneak into our house). Unfortunately, his bug box broke and it wasn’t really holding his little captives anymore. He was going to trap some in a dark box, so I went looking for a more humane, yet temporary solution by using a Mason jar. Now he really likes his little bug jar.
I just used:
A clean Mason Jar with lid (not the insert)
A piece of window screen we happened to have
I just cut a small circle of the screen and hot glued it inside the top of the lid so the bugs can get some air while they are being looked at. (We do free them after about 30 minutes).
No sooner did I get the jar lid together than we found a little Katydid (I think) on our sunporch — probably the coolest bug we have caught. My son enjoyed looking at it for a little bit before we sent it out to the woods where he/she belongs.
I think my son has used this jar to catch something every day. He really likes looking at little things.
*Make sure whoever uses the hot glue knows what they are doing. It’s really hot!
