I have admired the look of chalk board style plant markers and decided to try making some. It was easy enough to paint some sticks black, but for outdoor use, I thought that the weather might wash off chalk writing.
So my little idea was to use a white China Marker to write with. The oily pencil on the black stick doesn’t wash off in the rain, but it gives the same look as chalk writing.
To make these, I simply used some leftover black spray paint — I used gloss because it’s what I had, but flat would probably be even better — on some jumbo craft sticks, and then wrote on them with the china marker. You could get those special pointed wooden plant markers, too. I just happened to have craft sticks and figured they would work well enough. If you want a more elegant look, try some that don’t look so much like tongue depressors.
They have been outside for weeks and the writing has held up well. Now I just need to work on my penmanship.
